Private Shibari Lessons at LA Rope Dojo

A focused, personal way to learn rope with clarity, safety, and intention.

Private lessons are the fastest and most tailored way to develop your rope practice. Whether you’re brand new, refining technique, or exploring more advanced work, a private session allows us to meet you exactly where you are and build from there with precision.

A private lesson is structured but flexible. Think of it less like a class you attend and more like a conversation you participate in—one where rope is the language.

We begin by understanding your experience level, goals, and any concerns. From there, the session unfolds in a way that balances technical learning, communication, and embodied practice.

Depending on your level, your session may include:

  • Foundational tying techniques (for beginners)
  • Hands-in-front ties or foundational structures
  • Refinement of existing ties and transitions
  • Body awareness and positioning
  • Communication between partners
  • Scene-building concepts (for intermediate/advanced students)
  • Safety principles and risk awareness

There is always time for questions, adjustments, and repetition. Nothing is rushed.

Do I Need Experience?

Not at all.

Private lessons are ideal for:

  • Complete beginners who want a comfortable entry point
  • Couples who prefer learning together at their own pace
  • Students who want more attention than a group class allows
  • Experienced practitioners looking to refine or deepen their work

What Should I Wear?

Wear something you can move comfortably in and that allows access to the body for rope.

Recommended:

  • Athletic wear (leggings, t-shirt, tank top)
  • Comfortable underwear or layers you feel at ease in
  • Avoid bulky clothing like jeans or thick hoodies

You don’t need to dress up or perform. Comfort and ease matter more than aesthetics.

Do I Need to Bring Rope?

No. We provide high-quality jute rope for all private lessons. You’re welcome to use ours during the session.

If you already have rope, you can absolutely bring it. We can:

  • Evaluate its condition
  • Help you care for it
  • Show you how to handle it more effectively

What Will We Cover?

That depends on you.

For beginners, we often focus on:

  • How to handle rope
  • Basic ties and structure
  • Understanding tension and placement
  • Partner communication

For intermediate and advanced students:

  • Refinement of technique
  • Transitions and flow
  • Emotional and psychological pacing
  • Observation and responsiveness
  • Building cohesive rope scenes

If you’re unsure what you want to work on, that’s completely fine. We’ll guide you.

Do I Need a Partner?

Yes. Private lessons are taught as partner-based sessions, meaning you attend with someone you will be working with.

If you’re unsure about partners or logistics, feel free to reach out and we can help clarify options.

Is It Safe?

Safety is a core part of everything we teach.

You’ll learn:

  • How to recognize and avoid common risks
  • How to monitor your partner
  • How to communicate clearly and effectively

We prioritize sustainable practice, not just technique.

Why Take a Private Lesson?

Group classes are great for community and structure. Private lessons offer something different:

  • Personalized instruction
  • Immediate feedback
  • Faster progress
  • Space to ask anything
  • A quieter, more focused environment

For many students, it’s the moment things truly start to “click.”

Booking a Lesson

Private lessons are available by appointment. If you’re curious but unsure, reach out. We’re happy to talk through what would be most useful for you.

At LA Rope Dojo, private lessons are not about performance or perfection. They’re about learning how rope becomes a form of communication—clear, intentional, and alive between two people.
